“What is Intellectual Property?”

Abstract: What is a patent, and what qualifies for one? Intellectual Property (IP) encompasses copyrights, trademarks, trade secrets, and patents. This talk will introduce the basics, focusing on the factors that define the relative value of a patent. A patent is not the right to practice, but the right to prevent others from practicing (without the inventor/owner’s permission, most often in the form of a license). They are expensive, and the process with the Patent Office takes several years: is there a commercial market or other incentive to provide an IP basis for a given technology?
