Tonya Kuhl has received the 2015 Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Mentoring Undergraduate Research. Over the past 10 years, she has mentored 30 undergraduates in her lab. In addition to teaching and running her lab, Dr. Kuhl meets with all of her undergraduate researchers, as well as organizes group meetings where students are able to practice oral presentations for the undergraduate research conference and encourages students to publish their research.

Senior Chemical and Biochemical Engineering major, Christy Turcios, said, “No matter how crazy her schedule would get, she always made time for her undergraduate researchers. She would sit with us for hours to discuss anything we had questions about, sometimes even about life and career choices. If our experiments were not giving the expected results, she would come to lab to work together on it.”

Previously, Dr. Kuhl received The Judith Pool Mentorship Award from the Northern California Chapter (NCC) of the Association for Women in Science (AWIS) in 2011 and the 2007 Outstanding AIChE Student Chapter Advisor, a National Award by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.
