“Primary Response Genes Affect Cartilage Integrity after Injury”

Osteoarthritis often results from a previous injury to the joint.  Here we examine the events that connect an injury to the eventual arthritis, with a focus on the cellular responses to the injury that may actually contribute to arthritis progression.

Using a novel combination of inhibitors to prevent transcriptional activation of primary response genes, we were able to protect the mechanical and biological integrity of cartilage after injury, and preserve the mechanical integrity of cartilage allografts during storage.  These findings have potential implications for the treatment of joint injuries, as well as for the implantation of tissue-engineered cartilage into defects.
